Three people — including one student — have been charged in connection with a predawn incident at a Mississippi State University housing complex on Wednesday that saw multiple gunshots fired.
No one was injured in the gunfire exchange, which took place about 3:30 a.m. at the Arbour Acres apartment complex on the south end of the university campus, MSU Police Department investigators said. Arbour Acres is located south of Rice Hall.
Arrested in connection with the incident were:
• Michael Oden II, 21, of Starkville, on charges of possession of a deadly weapon on educational property by a student and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Oden, a sophomore at MSU, was convicted of statutory rape in 2006, officials said.
• Taforrest Allen, 21, of Starkville, on charges of displaying and discharging a firearm on educational property.
• Lajerrius Jeffries, 17, of Starkville, on a charge of tampering with evidence.
Allen and Jeffries are not enrolled at MSU. Jeffries, though 17, is being charged as an adult offender, said MSU Police Lt. Don Bartlett.
Information on bonds for the three suspects was not available at press time Wednesday night.
All three were arrested before 8 a.m. Wednesday after being detained for questioning in the immediate aftermath of the gunfire incident, said Bartlett.
The circumstances that led to the gunshots remain under investigation, but MSU police detectives have learned that some sort of altercation between students and non-students occurred, Bartlett said.
Additional information is still forthcoming as the investigation unfolds, Bartlett said.
Anyone who has information related to the gunfire incident is encouraged to call the MSU Police Department at 325-2121.
